How the Catholic saint of the day works
The Catholic liturgical calendar names a saint, feast, or memorial for nearly every day of the year. The universal Roman Calendar in force today was promulgated by Pope Saint Paul VI in 1969 in the apostolic letter Mysterii Paschalis, with subsequent revisions. The particular calendars of individual dioceses add regional saints to the universal list.
Catholic practice has long honored the saint of the day in Mass, in the Liturgy of the Hours, and in personal prayer. Many Catholics name a child after the saint on whose feast the child is born, read a passage from the saint's life daily, and pray for the saint's intercession on their feast day. See how are saints canonized for the Catholic process by which the Church declares a saint, and the Communion of Saints for the Catholic doctrine of the saints' intercession on behalf of the Church on earth.
How to pray for the saint's intercession
On the feast of a saint, the Catholic tradition recommends:
- Read the saint's biography (the Daily Ordo biographies are cited to primary sources).
- Pray a short invocation such as, "Saint [Name], pray for us."
- If a novena to the saint is being prayed, pray the day's prayer. See the Catholic novenas.
- Reflect on the saint's patronage: ask the saint's prayers for the particular work or state of life they protect.
Frequently asked questions
Who is the Catholic saint of today?
Today (Wednesday, October 28, 2026), the Daily Ordo collection commemorates Saint Jude Thaddeus. See the top of this page for a full biography link.
How many saints are in the Catholic calendar?
The universal Roman Calendar names approximately 365 saints (one for most days of the year); the full Roman Martyrology, which includes every canonized saint from the apostolic age to the present, lists more than 10,000 saints. The Catholic Church continues to canonize new saints; Pope Francis canonized more than 900 during his pontificate.
Why do different Catholic sources name different saints for the same day?
Three reasons: diocesan particular calendars add regional saints on top of the universal calendar; the Catholic Church sometimes celebrates the same saint on different dates in different rites (Latin, Byzantine, Maronite, etc.); and the pre-1969 and post-1969 Catholic calendars occasionally differ on feast dates. Daily Ordo follows the current universal Roman Calendar in the Latin Rite.
Can I pray to the saint of the day for a specific intention?
Yes. The Catholic tradition particularly encourages praying for the saint's intercession in matters touching their patronage. Saint Peregrine on his feast (May 1) for serious illness; Saint Joseph on his feast (March 19) for employment and the family; Saint Jude on his feast (October 28) for impossible causes. See the patronage field on each saint's biography for the full traditional list.
Is there a Catholic saint for every day of the year?
Yes, in the Roman Martyrology (the complete list of canonized Catholic saints). The universal Roman Calendar used in Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours includes an obligatory or optional memorial for most days; the remaining days are left open for local or free commemorations. The Catholic faithful may pray to any canonized saint on any day of the year, not only on the saint's feast.
